If you're looking to keep your 2.3L Ford Bronco running strong and free from excessive oil buildup, installing a UPR catch can is one of the best upgrades you can do. In today’s blog, we’re walking through the UPR plug-and-play catch can install, why it’s essential for turbocharged engines, and how this easy modification can help prevent long-term damage to your EcoBoost engine.
Why Install a Catch Can on Your Ford Bronco?
All modern vehicles, including the Ford Bronco, come equipped with a positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system designed to release excess pressure created inside the engine. However, turbocharged engines like the 2.3L EcoBoost generate even more blow-by gases, which contain oil vapors that get recirculated into the intake. Over time, this can lead to carbon buildup on intake valves, reduced performance, and even long-term engine wear.
A catch can works by capturing these oil vapors before they re-enter the intake system, allowing only clean air to return to the engine while storing the excess oil in a reservoir that can be drained during maintenance. This simple yet effective upgrade helps improve engine longevity and efficiency, making it a must-have mod for any off-road enthusiast.
Step-by-Step UPR Catch Can Install
For this install, I used the UPR plug-and-play catch can, available now at BuckleUpOffroad.com. This kit is designed for an easy bolt-on installation with OEM-style fittings, making it an ideal option for Bronco owners who want a hassle-free solution.
Installation Overview:
Locate the PCV hose – This hose runs from the intake manifold and needs to be removed.
Identify the correct hose connections – The female connector marked "12.6" attaches to the intake manifold, while the 90-degree male fitting connects to the previously removed PCV hose.
Mount the catch can – I encountered a slight fitment issue due to my Diode Dynamics pod lights, but a quick bracket relocation solved the problem.
Route the hoses properly – Ensuring the hoses are secure and free from obstructions will prevent future issues.
Final tightening and engine cover reinstallation – The Buckle Up Off-Road engine cover fit perfectly with the new catch can installed.
The entire installation was quick and easy, making this an ideal DIY project for any Bronco owner looking to protect their engine.
Future Catch Can Maintenance & Next Steps
Since the catch can collects oil over time, it’s important to check and drain it regularly, especially around oil change intervals. I’ll be doing a follow-up video to show exactly how much oil accumulates in the can over time.
Next up, I’ll be installing a UPR dual-valve catch can on my 2.7L Ford Bronco for even better crankcase ventilation and oil separation.
